Masks are a very popular form of art in the Ivory Coast. The masks can symbolize lesser gods, animals or dead people. The masks are sacred and they are considered dangerous. Only high ranking people can have them. People believe that when someone's face comes into contact with the mask, they take on the spirit of the mask.
